IWCA Education at UC Davis 3-4-26
03/05/2026
NCIWC members presented a 50-minute education class representing the IWCA to an Animal Science class at UC Davis focused on Companion Animals. The 330 students were mostly pre-vet majors.
Kerri Shandro, Sue Williams, and Cindy Steele spoke about the history of the Irish Wolfhound, common health concerns, and ongoing efforts as breeders, owners and exhibitors to protect and preserve this remarkable breed.
Randy Popkin, Lynne Park and Ria Sherman joined us and brought their IW for a meet and great at the conclusion of the class for a total of nine IW. It was very impressive and drew large crowds for pets, hugs, and photos!
A message from UC Davis instructor Kristen Kellet:
Hello amazing Irish Wolfhound owners,
Well, today was officially one of the best ANS 42 classes of the quarter! It was so wonderful to learn from you and meet the hounds. As expected, the hounds were so well-mannered and served as perfect breed ambassadors! This was a really nice learning opportunity for our students, and they are likely to take their new Irish Wolfhound knowledge into their future careers. Thank you for taking the time to drive to California(!), drive to Davis, and chat with so many UC Davis students on campus - including the many who stopped to talk on the quad but were not part of our class.
Additionally, it was very kind of you to give one of the students the Irish Wolfhound magazine - she was thrilled. The presentation was very professionally done - with the right amount of information for the students and a nice flow. I am already thinking about what test questions the students will get on their final exam from today's talk! If I have the opportunity to teach this course again next winter, it would be wonderful to have you back.
